Background of the Study

Indigenous fashion designers play a pivotal role in preserving cultural heritage by incorporating traditional aesthetics into modern apparel. In Abeokuta North, local designers use indigenous fabrics, patterns, and techniques to create clothing that reflects the community’s cultural identity (Akinwande, 2023). Their creative expressions help sustain traditional art forms while introducing them to contemporary markets (Olaitan, 2024). Through fashion, these designers tell cultural stories and reinforce the community’s historical narratives (Ayodele, 2025). However, globalization and mass production pose challenges that may compromise the authenticity of indigenous designs. This study evaluates the contributions of indigenous fashion designers in safeguarding cultural heritage and examines how market pressures affect the preservation of traditional aesthetics (Akinwande, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the cultural importance of indigenous fashion, designers in Abeokuta North face challenges from global market trends and mass production, which often overshadow traditional designs and lead to a dilution of cultural expression (Olaitan, 2024). This study seeks to understand how these pressures impact the ability of indigenous designers to maintain cultural authenticity while remaining commercially viable (Ayodele, 2025). The problem lies in balancing cultural preservation with market demands.

Objectives of the Study:

1. To evaluate the contributions of indigenous fashion designers to cultural preservation.

2. To identify challenges affecting the authenticity of traditional designs.

3. To propose strategies for enhancing the sustainability of indigenous fashion.

Research Questions:

1. How do indigenous fashion designers contribute to cultural preservation in Abeokuta North?

2. What challenges affect the authenticity of indigenous fashion designs?

3. What strategies can support the sustainable development of indigenous fashion?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Indigenous fashion designers significantly promote cultural preservation.

2. Globalization negatively impacts the authenticity of traditional designs.

3. Supportive policies can enhance the sustainability of indigenous fashion.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it highlights the crucial role of indigenous fashion designers in preserving cultural heritage, offering insights into challenges and opportunities within the creative industry. The findings will inform strategies that protect cultural identity while promoting economic empowerment through sustainable fashion practices (Akinwande, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to evaluating the role of indigenous fashion designers in cultural preservation in Abeokuta North Local Government Area, focusing on design practices and market influences.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Indigenous Fashion Designers: Creators who incorporate traditional cultural elements into clothing design.

2. Cultural Preservation: The safeguarding of cultural heritage and traditions.

3. Authenticity: The extent to which a cultural product genuinely reflects traditional practices.
